About the Research Internship

This remote internship forms part of the Adaptive Social Protection – Evidence for Child Outcomes (ASPECT) project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project evaluates how social protection systems can better support households affected by climate shocks, economic instability, and fragile conditions.

The internship specifically supports a mixed-methods impact evaluation of the Mobile Registration Vans (MRVs) used in Pakistan to expand access to the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER). The goal: assess whether the MRVs improve inclusion, accessibility, and responsiveness of the country’s social protection system.


Key Responsibilities

The remote intern will co-lead the qualitative research component alongside an international expert. Core tasks include:

1. Research Design & Review

  • Support development of qualitative protocols, tools, and ethics documentation
  • Conduct desk reviews and contribute to methodological planning

2. Field Data Collection (Remote Leadership)

  • Conduct six key informant interviews (KIIs) during inception phase
  • Co-draft inception memos and analysis summaries

3. Training & Oversight

  • Train data collectors
  • Provide guidance on data quality and fieldwork execution

4. Qualitative Analysis

  • Code transcripts using NVivo
  • Lead analysis and interpretation of qualitative findings

5. Reporting

  • Contribute to baseline and endline research reports
  • Draft research briefs for the three MRV operational modalities
  • Co-write mixed-method outputs and policy recommendations

6. Presentation & Dissemination

  • Present findings during validation workshops
  • Support development of PowerPoint slides and policy briefs

This internship is highly analytical and requires strong qualitative research experience.


Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Education

  • Master’s degree or higher in:
    • Sociology
    • Anthropology
    • Public/Social Policy
    • Education
    • Public Health
    • International Development
    • Or a related field

Work Experience

At least 5 years of proven experience in:

  • Qualitative research and fieldwork in Pakistan
  • Conducting KIIs, FGDs, and in-depth interviews
  • Mixed-method research projects
  • Coding and analysis using NVivo, Atlas.ti, or equivalent
  • Experience in Balochistan, Sindh, KP, or Islamabad (highly preferred)

Skills

  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Cultural sensitivity and experience working in diverse teams

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Urdu (spoken and written)

Desirable Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Prior research related to social protection or humanitarian response
  • Publications on adaptive social protection or related areas
  • Experience working with UNICEF or other UN agencies
  • Experience working in fragile, climate-affected, or conflict-prone settings
