What Does the USTC Internship Offer?

The program is designed to help students improve their research capabilities by working in USTC’s research environment.

Participants can conduct research in state-of-the-art laboratories under the guidance of USTC professors.

Students can also build academic relationships with faculty members and other researchers. According to USTC, these relationships can provide participants with a competitive advantage when applying for future Master’s, PhD and postdoctoral programmes at the university.

Another benefit is the opportunity to apply for free Chinese language and culture classes, giving international participants an additional cultural and educational experience while studying in China.

USTC Fellowship Level A – Fully Funded

USTC offers a limited number of scholarships to outstanding applicants. Level A provides the most comprehensive funding package.

Recipients receive:

  • Full tuition waiver
  • Comprehensive medical insurance
  • Free university dormitory
  • Monthly living stipend

The monthly stipend depends on the participant’s academic level:

Bachelor’s students: RMB 2,500 per month
Master’s students: RMB 3,000 per month
PhD students: RMB 3,500 per month

Because Level A includes tuition, insurance, university accommodation and a monthly stipend, applicants receiving this level can reasonably describe their award as fully funded.

However, applicants should note that not every person admitted to the internship automatically receives Level A funding. USTC states that scholarships are limited and applicants will be evaluated.

USTC Fellowship Levels B and C

Students may also be considered for other funding levels.

Level B provides a tuition waiver, comprehensive medical insurance and free university dormitory accommodation.

Level C provides a tuition waiver.

Students who do not receive a fellowship can still participate on a self-funded basis if admitted.

Costs for Self-Funded Participants

Students who do not receive scholarship funding are responsible for the relevant programme expenses.

For undergraduate and Master’s students, tuition is listed as RMB 2,160 per month, RMB 13,000 per half year or RMB 26,000 per year.

For PhD students, tuition is RMB 2,660 per month, RMB 16,000 per half year or RMB 32,000 per year.

International student dormitory accommodation costs approximately RMB 500–1,000 per month, depending on the room type and size.

Insurance costs RMB 160 per month.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must satisfy USTC’s eligibility requirements.

Candidates must be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport and should be between 18 and 40 years old.

Applicants must also be in good health and have no criminal record.

Academically, applicants must currently be enrolled as full-time students in one of the following categories:

Third- or fourth-year undergraduate students, Master’s students, or doctoral students.

Candidates must also demonstrate a good command of English.

Internship Duration

The USTC Research Internship can last from:

3 months to 1 year.

This flexibility allows students to choose a period that fits their academic schedules and research objectives.

Application Deadlines for the USTC Fellowship

Deadlines depend on the fellowship level and intended semester.

Applicants seeking USTC Fellowship Level A must complete their online applications during these periods:

Fall semester: January 1 – March 31
Spring semester: July 1 – September 30

Visa Requirements

Successful international students will need the appropriate documentation to enter and study in China.

Students must enter China with the appropriate student visa and ensure that their immigration status remains valid throughout their stay.

Accommodation

Students receiving USTC Fellowship Level A or Level B can receive on-campus accommodation.

However, university accommodation is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If the available rooms are full, students will need to arrange off-campus accommodation.

Level C recipients and self-funded participants are generally required to find off-campus accommodation themselves, although USTC indicates that assistance may be provided in finding housing.

Why Consider the USTC Research Internship?

The program can be particularly valuable for students considering postgraduate research careers.

Beyond financial support for selected fellows, participants receive an opportunity to work within a major Chinese research university, strengthen their research skills and develop relationships with academics.
