Role Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Specialist (P3) will coordinate UN Women’s global social media strategies, ensuring that the organization’s digital presence effectively communicates its mission and priorities.

This role involves managing high-impact social campaigns, developing digital partnerships, overseeing social media channels, and providing technical support and training to UN Women’s field offices. The incumbent will co-supervise up to two consultants.


Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and Implement Global Social Media Strategies

  • Design and execute social media strategies for major events, campaigns, and UN observances (e.g., International Women’s Day).
  • Coordinate content planning and creative production with design and multimedia teams.
  • Manage cross-platform campaigns to enhance UN Women’s online visibility.
  • Prepare analytics reports and evaluate campaign performance.
  • Build and maintain digital partnerships with influencers, media, and UN entities.

2. Manage Daily Social Media Engagement

  • Oversee UN Women’s official accounts on X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Lead daily content scheduling, community engagement, and audience growth.
  • Ensure brand consistency and message alignment across platforms.
  • Monitor conversations, track engagement trends, and identify real-time opportunities.
  • Supervise consultants assisting with content and community management.
  • Research and test new tools for digital publishing and analytics (e.g., HootSuite).

3. Provide Technical Guidance and Capacity Building

  • Offer ongoing support to regional and country offices in managing their social media accounts.
  • Develop and distribute social media toolkits and guidance notes for staff.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including access permissions and records maintenance.
  • Deliver training workshops for UN Women teams and partner organizations on social media engagement and content creation.
  • Represent UN Women’s digital communications work in inter-agency collaborations and UN events.

4. Additional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to digital communication strategies that enhance visibility, advocacy, and engagement.
  • Support the integration of gender equality messaging across UN campaigns.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Communications and Advocacy Division.

Required Qualifications UN Women Social Media Specialist

Education

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of international-level experience in social media management or digital communications.
  • Proven record of designing and implementing social media strategies and campaigns for large organizations.
  • Experience in content production, editing, and storytelling across multiple digital platforms.
  • Skilled in using social media management tools (e.g., HootSuite, Sprinklr) and analytics platforms.
  • Experience in fast-paced or sensitive advocacy contexts (human rights, gender equality, humanitarian).
  • Experience working within the UN system or international NGOs is an asset.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (both written and oral) is required.
  • Working knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, or Russian) is an advantage.
