About the Role

The position is part of the Gates Foundation’s Advocacy & System Improvement (A&SI) team and focuses on using measurement, evaluation and research to support strategic decision-making.

The successful candidate will serve as a senior strategic learning partner, helping teams assess progress, understand emerging evidence and use insights to inform decisions about investing, scaling, pivoting or stopping initiatives.

The role does not have direct people management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

The Principal Officer will:

Lead measurement, evaluation and research activities.
Help develop and refine strategies and evaluate interventions.
Assess progress against key outcomes.
Research emerging topics relevant to foundation strategies.
Serve as an MLE technical and thought leader for A&SI.
Support foundation strategy accountability and reporting.
Collaborate on the team-wide learning agenda.
Develop learning opportunities using research and evaluation insights.
Establish regular processes for surfacing and applying lessons.
Develop approaches for measuring progress and supporting predictive resource allocation.
Provide evidence and insights to support strategic decisions.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have an advanced degree or equivalent demonstrated experience.

The foundation is seeking candidates with experience in:

Measurement, evaluation and research design.
K-12 and postsecondary education sectors.
Developing and interpreting research and evaluation.
Introducing tools that help teams understand measurement and evaluation.
Thought leadership in measurement and evaluation.
Leading complex initiatives with budget responsibility.
Project leadership and progressively increasing strategic responsibilities.
Predictive modeling and impact analysis.
Economics, policy or broad cross-sector research may be relevant.

Salary and Benefits

The general salary range is $212,800 to $329,800 USD.

For positions based in Seattle, Washington, and Washington, D.C., the listed range is $234,000 to $362,800 USD.
