Overview

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Research Internship Program offers a highly competitive, fully funded research opportunity for outstanding undergraduate and master’s-level students from around the world. Interns work directly with OIST faculty on cutting-edge research projects in a truly international research environment located in Okinawa, Japan.

Internships are available twice per year, with flexible start dates and placements across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Admission is competitive, and only a limited number of interns are selected in each round.


Internship Intakes (2026–2027)

Available internship periods

  • October 2026 – March 2027
  • April 2027 – September 2027

Faculty and project availability for October 2026 – March 2027 will be updated by mid-February 2026. Applicants are advised to review the updated list before submitting their application.

OIST hosts over 100 interdisciplinary research units, offering internship projects in areas including (but not limited to):

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
  • Quantum Physics & Quantum Information
  • Mathematics & Applied Mathematics
  • Neuroscience & Cognitive Science
  • Evolutionary Biology & Genomics
  • Marine Science & Climate Research
  • Chemistry, Materials Science & Nanotechnology

Projects are not pre-assigned. After acceptance, interns and faculty jointly define the research scope based on interests and background.

Applicants must not contact faculty directly before applying. All applications must go through the official OIST online system.


Eligibility Criteria For OIST Research Internship Program 2026

Academic background

  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate or master’s degree programmes
  • Strong academic performance in a relevant discipline
  • Applicants from all countries are welcome

Other requirements

  • Genuine interest in scientific research
  • Ability to work full-time during the internship
  • English proficiency (no official test score required)

There are no age limits and no nationality restrictions.
