About the Role
The Head of Communications will provide strategic leadership for Greenpeace Africa’s communications function, ensuring the organization’s campaigns resonate with audiences across Africa and internationally.
Working closely with the Deputy Engagement Director, Digital Team, and Campaign teams, the successful candidate will oversee media engagement, storytelling, brand management, crisis communications, and strategic messaging that advances Greenpeace Africa’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Develop and implement Greenpeace Africa’s communications strategy.
- Lead communications for climate justice and environmental campaigns.
- Build strong relationships with African and international media.
- Oversee press releases, interviews, opinion articles, and media briefings.
- Translate complex environmental issues into compelling public stories.
- Strengthen Greenpeace Africa’s brand and public reputation.
- Lead crisis communication planning and response.
- Manage and mentor a communications team across multiple countries.
- Coordinate external agencies, photographers, videographers, and creative partners.
- Represent Greenpeace Africa at conferences, public events, and strategic meetings.
- Monitor communications performance using media analytics and audience engagement data.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Political Science, International Relations, or a related discipline.
- A Master’s degree is an advantage.
- At least 6 years of progressive communications experience.
- Leadership experience managing multidisciplinary communications teams.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in Africa, preferably within NGOs, advocacy organizations, media, or social justice movements.
- Experience in crisis communications and high-profile media engagement.
Skills and Competencies
Ideal candidates should demonstrate:
- Fluency in English, with French strongly preferred.
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Strong media relations and public speaking abilities.
- Experience in traditional and digital communications.
- Strategic leadership and team management.
- Crisis and reputation management expertise.
- Cross-cultural communication skills.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Passion for climate justice, environmental protection, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
