UNDP Washington offers two competitive internship tracks:

General Internship

Designed for students interested in policy, development, governance, economics, or international affairs. Responsibilities may include:

• Attending U.S. Congressional hearings and policy forums
• Assisting in drafting reports, briefings, and communications
• Supporting UNDP events and outreach
• Conducting research and updating organizational databases
• Participating in internal UNDP meetings and discussions

Communications & Outreach Internship

This track is ideal for students with strong communication, digital media, or public relations skills.

• Media monitoring and compilation of daily news clips
• Drafting newsletters, releases, and content
• Supporting digital storytelling, video editing, and graphics

Preferred (but not required):

• Experience in journalism, communications, media, or digital marketing
• Familiarity with Twitter, Hootsuite, Constant Contact
• Audio/video editing skills

Internship Schedule (2026)

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, candidates must meet all of the following:

• Enrolled in a graduate-level degree programme (Master’s or PhD)
• Will return to school after the internship
• Able to work 3 consecutive months, minimum 24 hours per week
• Strong interest in global issues and international development
• High level of professionalism and cultural sensitivity
• Written and spoken proficiency in English
• Commitment to UN values

No prior experience is required.

Internship Conditions (Paid)

• Interns receive a monthly stipend, based on location
• Part-time interns receive pro-rated pay
• Interns are responsible for:

  • Visa arrangements (if applicable)
  • Housing and daily expenses
• Some positions may allow remote or hybrid work
• The internship does not guarantee employment with UNDP
