WTO Internship Programme 2026: Opportunities for Postgraduate Students and Graduates
The World Trade Organization (WTO) offers several internship opportunities for postgraduate students and recent graduates interested in international trade, law, economics, policy and related fields.
The WTO Secretariat has three internship programmes designed to provide practical experience while increasing the diversity of the organization. These include the WTO Internship Programme, the China LDCs, Accessions and General Internship Programme, and the WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies.
WTO Internship Programme
The WTO Internship Programme is open to postgraduate students and recent graduates from WTO member and observer countries. It gives participants the opportunity to gain professional experience at the WTO and develop their understanding of international trade and trade policy.
Interns may work in a range of areas, depending on the needs of the division to which they are assigned. These areas include:
- Trade law
- Economics
- Statistics
- Trade policy
- Languages
- Finance and administration
- Human resources
- Communications and external relations
- Information management
- Information technology
The internship can last for up to six months. Interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60, including weekends and official holidays during the internship period. However, travel costs to and from Geneva are not covered under this programme. Interns must also arrange their own mandatory Swiss medical insurance.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet specific academic and eligibility requirements. Candidates must be nationals of a WTO member state or a country or customs territory involved in accession negotiations.
Applicants must also have completed their undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline and meet one of the postgraduate study requirements. They must either be currently enrolled in a master’s programme with at least one year completed, have completed a master’s degree and be enrolled in a higher-level postgraduate programme, or have completed a master’s or PhD within the previous two years.
Candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time of the internship.
China LDCs, Accessions and General Internship Programme
The WTO also offers internship opportunities sponsored by the Government of China for recent graduates and young professionals from least-developed countries and developing economies.
Up to 10 internships are offered annually. Five interns are placed in the Accessions Division, while the remaining interns may be assigned to other WTO divisions according to organizational needs and applicants’ areas of interest.
Possible areas include agriculture, intellectual property, dispute settlement, government procurement, competition policy, trade and development, trade and environment, trade in services, investment, trade facilitation and trade policy analysis.
These internships can last for a maximum of 10 months. Participants receive a daily allowance of CHF 90, while economy-class travel to and from Geneva is also covered. An additional CHF 100 per month is provided to help subsidize mandatory health insurance.
Applicants must be nationals of an eligible developing country or least-developed country, have completed relevant undergraduate studies and at least one year of postgraduate studies, and be 30 years old or younger.
WTO PhD Internship Programme
The WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies, also known as the PhD Internship Programme, supports doctoral students from developing countries conducting research on WTO-related issues.
Participants work on their doctoral thesis rather than performing assignments for the WTO Secretariat. They receive mentoring and access to WTO facilities and information. The programme lasts between three and six months.
Participants receive a daily allowance of CHF 60, and economy-class travel to and from Geneva is covered. Applicants must be in the final stage of their PhD, with at least 75% of their thesis completed, and must be able to work in English, French or Spanish.
The supplied WTO information states that this programme is currently on hold.
How to Apply
Applications for the WTO Internship Programme are submitted through the WTO external jobs platform. Recruitment is ongoing rather than limited to one annual application period, although specific internship vacancies may also be advertised when particular qualifications or skills are required.
