The WHO Mental Health Specialist Job 2026 offers an opportunity for a qualified psychiatrist to support mental health services across districts in Nepal. The position is part of a roster for national consultants and focuses on clinical mentoring, supervision, referral care and mhGAP training.

The World Health Organization is establishing a roster of National Consultant – Mental Health Specialists to support implementation of Nepal’s National Mental Health Care Program 2022.

Successful candidates will be placed on the roster and may subsequently be selected for consultancy assignments. Inclusion on the roster does not guarantee a contract.

The consultancy is part-time and is expected to involve 4–6 days per month for 11 months, with a possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

The Mental Health Specialist will:

Conduct monthly mental health outpatient clinics in assigned district hospitals.
Provide referral care for cases referred from primary healthcare teams.
Mentor and supervise district mental health teams.
Guide psychosocial nurses and health workers providing counselling services.
Participate as a trainer in two mhGAP training sessions.
Organise monthly virtual case-conference supervision sessions.
Support communication and mentoring platforms for healthcare providers.
Strengthen continuity of care, referral coordination and community outreach.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

Essential:

MBBS
MD in Psychiatry

Desirable:

mhGAP Training of Trainers

Experience

Candidates should have:

At least 2 years of clinical experience in mental health.
Experience at provincial or district level is desirable.
Experience providing psychiatric services, mentoring, supervision and referral/follow-up care is desirable.

Candidates should also have general computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Excellent spoken and written Nepali and English are required.

Location and Travel

The primary location is Nepal, with work based in Kathmandu and/or provincial headquarters.

The consultant will travel approximately once a month to assigned districts for clinical mentoring, supervision and referral care.

The listed districts include Bajhang, Kailali, Achham, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Bardiya, Kapilvastu, Myagdi, Tanahu, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, Bara, Siraha, Udaipur, Bhojpur and Panchthar.

The proposed locations may be revised depending on programme needs, including priorities in flood-affected areas.
