About the EWAP Research Fellowship

The EWAP Research Fellowship aims to help build Africa’s next generation of enhanced weathering researchers.

Enhanced weathering is an emerging area of research that explores how naturally occurring geological processes can potentially contribute to carbon removal while interacting with agricultural and environmental systems.

The fellowship will introduce participants to the foundations of enhanced weathering while helping them develop practical research skills and understand the questions surrounding its application in African contexts.

Fellows will learn alongside EWAP researchers and guest experts and will have opportunities to receive mentoring, feedback and support as they develop their own research ideas.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship welcomes Expressions of Interest from:

  • Final-year undergraduate students
  • Master’s students
  • PhD candidates
  • Early-career researchers

The programme is interdisciplinary, meaning applicants from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Relevant areas include environmental and climate science, agriculture, soil science, geochemistry, engineering, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), sustainability, economics, business, supply chains, policy, governance, carbon markets and climate finance.

Applicants working in related disciplines that can contribute to enhanced weathering research in African contexts are also encouraged to consider applying.

What Will Fellows Learn?

The 12-week programme is structured around four stages.

Weeks 1–3: Research Foundations

Participants will be introduced to enhanced weathering, African research contexts and key questions connecting science, climate and society.

Weeks 4–6: Evidence and Research Practice

Fellows will develop skills in critical reading, research design and evaluating the evidence required for credible enhanced weathering research.

Weeks 7–9: Systems and Implementation

This stage will explore soils and agronomy alongside MRV, logistics, sustainability, policy, finance and responsible implementation.

Weeks 10–12: From Learning to Contribution

The final stage focuses on mentoring, collaborative work, presentations, reflection and planning the next stage of participants’ research.

The programme will include expert-led sessions, practical exercises, peer collaboration, mentoring and feedback. Fellows may also receive support to develop ideas for publications, research proposals and collaborative projects.

Is the EWAP Fellowship Funded?

There is no application or participation fee, but applicants should understand that this is an unpaid fellowship programme.

EWAP does not provide a stipend, salary or travel funding as part of the programme. Participation also does not guarantee a future paid or funded position with EWAP.

Fellows who successfully complete the programme requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion.

How to Apply

The first step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). The EOI asks applicants about their academic or professional background, research interests and motivation for joining the fellowship.

Applicants can also indicate that they would like to attend the EWAP Information Webinar and submit questions for the EWAP team.

Those selected after the EOI stage will be invited to complete the full application.

APPLY ON THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
