Mozilla Foundation Fellows Program 2027–2028: Fully Funded Fellowships Worth Up to $125,000

The Mozilla Foundation Fellows Program 2027–2028 is now accepting applications from innovative researchers, technology professionals, entrepreneurs and builders working to create a more open, inclusive and trustworthy internet.

Mozilla Foundation will award 10 fellowships for the 2027–2028 programme, offering successful applicants up to $125,000 over 12 months. The programme also provides access to a global network of more than 200 former fellows across 37 countries.

The fellowship supports individuals developing practical solutions to challenges involving technology, digital rights, artificial intelligence, internet governance and the future of the digital world.

Applications are open under two fellowship tracks: Embedded and Independent.

Letters of Intent must be submitted by 17 December 2026.

About the Mozilla Foundation Fellows Program

Since 2011, Mozilla Foundation has supported more than 200 fellows working to ensure that technology serves people and communities.

The fellowship is designed for individuals who are developing practical solutions to emerging technology challenges. Rather than focusing exclusively on research proposals or theoretical ideas, Mozilla looks for applicants who have demonstrated their ability to build, test and implement solutions.

Successful fellows become part of an international community of innovators, researchers, technologists and leaders working towards a more equitable digital future.

Many former fellows have gone on to establish organisations, lead initiatives and influence technology policy.

The Mozilla Foundation Fellows Program offers substantial financial and professional support.

Successful applicants can receive:

  • Funding: Up to $125,000 over 12 months.

Available Fellowship Tracks

The 2027 call for applications offers two fellowship tracks:

1. Embedded Fellowship

This track is designed for fellows undertaking their work in an embedded setting. Applicants should consult the official call for details about the placement structure, expectations and eligibility requirements.

2. Independent Fellowship

This track supports fellows pursuing independent projects and initiatives aligned with Mozilla Foundation’s mission.

Applicants should review the official application guidelines to determine which track best matches their proposed work.

Who Should Apply?

Mozilla Foundation is looking for builders at different stages of their professional journeys.

The ideal candidate may be someone who has already developed a project, technology or initiative but has not yet gained widespread recognition, or an established leader ready to undertake more ambitious, field-defining work.

The foundation evaluates applicants against three main qualities:

1. Trailblazing

Applicants should demonstrate a willingness to challenge existing approaches and develop new solutions to emerging technology challenges.

2. Rigorous

Candidates should provide evidence of their ability to build and implement projects. Mozilla is particularly interested in work that has already been tested, deployed or used by communities.

3. Community-driven

Successful fellows should demonstrate a commitment to working alongside communities rather than simply developing solutions for them.

Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of their work, including repositories, demonstrations, datasets, published papers, deployments or other tangible outputs.

What Types of Projects Are Encouraged?

The programme supports ambitious projects that advance technology in the public interest.

Potential areas of relevance include:

  • Artificial intelligence and responsible technology.
  • Digital rights and online privacy.
  • Internet governance and accountability.
  • Open-source technology.
  • Community-led digital innovation.
  • Digital inclusion and equitable access.
  • Technology policy and public interest research.
  • Alternative digital infrastructure and decentralised systems.

Applicants should demonstrate how their work contributes to Mozilla’s broader mission of building a healthier internet.
