About NASA Internships
NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement provides opportunities for more than 2,000 students annually. Interns work with NASA mentors and can develop technical, professional and career-readiness skills.
The opportunities are not limited to STEM students. NASA also offers internships involving communications, human resources, administration, accounting, procurement and other business functions.
OSTEM Internships
OSTEM provides short-term, hands-on internships connected to NASA projects. Most interns receive a paid stipend, although some individual projects may be unpaid volunteer opportunities. The stipend depends on academic level and session duration.
OSTEM Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be U.S. citizens.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Be enrolled in a certificate or degree programme at an accredited U.S. educational institution.
Recent graduates may also apply for internships taking place during the three sessions immediately following graduation.
Pathways Internships
NASA Pathways internships are structured federal internships designed to prepare students for potential careers with NASA. They can extend across multiple semesters and include an Individual Development Plan covering assignments, training and learning opportunities.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 16 years old, enrolled or accepted at least half time in an accredited educational institution, and pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.9 is also required, along with the ability to complete at least 480 hours before completing degree or certificate requirements.
Fields Available
NASA internships can cover engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, information technology and other STEM disciplines. Opportunities may also be available in programme management, human resources, accounting, budgeting, communications, procurement, safety, occupational health and social sciences.
How to Apply
OSTEM applicants use NASA’s STEM Gateway to search for projects and submit applications. Applicants can create a profile and apply for multiple suitable opportunities. Letters of recommendation are not required for the OSTEM application.
Pathways applicants apply through USAJOBS when positions are available. Applicants should review individual vacancy requirements and prepare a federal résumé.
Strong Application Call
Students interested in NASA Internships 2027 should prepare their academic information, résumé and application profile early. Carefully check the citizenship, enrollment, GPA and programme requirements before applying.
For OSTEM, pay particular attention to the session deadlines and submit through NASA’s STEM Gateway. For Pathways, monitor USAJOBS for openings and review each vacancy’s requirements before submitting an application.
International students should note that the standard OSTEM and Pathways programmes require U.S. citizenship. NASA maintains separate information on international internship opportunities, but availability depends on participating countries and programmes.
