Western Balkans Meet Japan 2026–27 exchange programme, officially titled “Western Balkans meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future,” is a seven-day cultural and academic exchange opportunity supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO).

About Western Balkans Meet Japan

The Western Balkans Meet Japan programme is organized under Japan’s MIRAI Programme, which has supported youth exchanges since 2018.

The initiative aims to deepen participants’ understanding of Japan and its policies while promoting mutual understanding and reconciliation through intellectual and cultural exchange. It also seeks to build foundations for stronger friendship and cooperation between Japan and the Western Balkans.

Participants can expect an educational experience combining academic discussions, institutional visits, cultural activities and interaction with other young people from the Western Balkans.

Programme Dates and Location

The 2026–27 exchange will be held in Japan from January 20 to January 26, 2027.

The programme lasts seven days, with activities focused on learning about Japan, peacebuilding, reconciliation, regional cooperation and intercultural understanding.

Who Was Eligible to Apply?

The official RYCO announcement specifies that applicants needed to satisfy several conditions.

Applicants had to:

Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or PhD programme in the Western Balkans.
Be at least 20 years old at the time of application.
Live in one of the Western Balkan societies.
Hold a passport issued by one of the WB6 countries.
Have a good command of English.

The WB6 countries covered by the call were:

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.*

Applicants with demonstrated ties to Japan, including previous studies or cultural activities, were considered an asset. Experience related to dealing with the past, reconciliation, regional cooperation or intercultural learning was also desirable.

Fully Funded Benefits

The exchange programme provides substantial financial support for selected participants.

According to RYCO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan covers:

Round-trip international economy-class air tickets to Japan
Overseas travel and accident insurance
Accommodation
Transportation within Japan
Meals during the programme
Admission fees for scheduled activities in Japan

This means the core programme costs are covered for selected participants.

Selection Process

The programme is highly competitive.
